A laser is a device that emits electromagnetic radition in a controllled, or coherent, way. Coherence in the stilmulation of eletromagnetic radiation is what gives the laser its precision. Temporal coherence is what allows a laser to emit light with a low spectrum, one colour of light for example. By contrast, spatial coherence allows great precision in targeting the laser, enabling such things as laser cutting.

Laser cutting is used in many manufacturing applications, as depicted below. There are many kinds of lasers and laser cutting machines, some are used in metal fabrication, some in lithography, some for engraving. A laser may be suitable for one application but not another.
